International Air Travel with a Cat

I will be traveling a couple of weeks with my cat from Africa to the Caribbean. My cat is a nervous traveler and I am debating whether to take him in the cabin or put him in the hold. He will meet the requirements for in-cabin travel.

My vet has advised that pets in general are more comfortable in the hold because they are away from new noises, smells and people. To a certain extent I can see the truth in that advice. At the same time, I will worry that he will get left behind or very nervous and I wont' be there to comfort him.

I would appreciate hearing the opinions and/or experiences of other cat lovers.

When I fly with my cat, she's always in the cabin with me. I would not put her in cargo area, because that's just too much new smells and noises (even more and louder than in cabin), and she would be sitting next to a bunch of luggages, instead of next to my feet. However, that being said, my cat has always been a wonderful traveler, she has never meowed even once in cabin, even though she has flown cross country about ten times. And she has no problem meeting/seeing new people, part of her personality also.

You indicated that your cat is a nervous traveler, and like your vet, I would recommend that it would be probably best for everybody to let her to in the cargo hold, so she won't meow and howl the entire eight hours of flight (or however long it usually takes to fly from Africa to the Caribbean). She will likely to feel nervous anyways even if she goes in cabin with you (due to her personality that you described).
