New to vacationing with a dog.

Postby orchid » Tue Jun 09, 2009 12:46 pm

In the past we left our pets home with a family member. This worked out well. They were at home and well cared for. We have a new dog who is devoted to my husband and sits at the window and watches for him any time he is gone. She won't go to bed or relax until he returns. We feel we must take her along on vacation and have found a pet friendly resort to visit. She is a good dog and I think the trip will work out well for the most part.

I am wondering if we can ever leave her in our suite alone, though. (For maybe an hour.) She may just sleep or watch by a window while we're gone but in a strange place, I'm not sure what she'll do. She doesn't bark unless a stranger comes around. If it is allowed by the resort, is it okay to leave a dog alone in our room (from the pet's perspective)?
Most Lodging has their own rules you have to follow. Make sure you know what they are before leaving her. Most of the time you are not allowed to leave them alone. Sometimes you can if they are kept in a kennel. Being obsessed over your husband is not good. You should go to the Dog Whisperers web site to see if you can get some good training info to calm her down and ease her separation anxiety.
Another great website to find travel info "per city" is

http://www.dogfriendly.com/

PS STAY AWAY from Holiday Inn's, they use rat/mouse poison under the beds and don't tell patrons. There is one of my posts a few months back that lists a prior post of a couple that took their Yorkies to this chain and they were poisoned. Luckily the nearby Vet saved them, but the HOTEL CHAIN was very undignified about the incident.

We generally leave the TV on and inform the hotel staff they are in the room alone and my bark if someone comes by. We also inform housekeeping to stay out until we return. Hotels that accepts pet should know there will be noise when the pets are left alone that what the pet deposit is for. If you can't leave them in the room, don't stay there.
