pet friendly beaches

Postby knpj » Tue May 08, 2007 12:16 pm

We have an RV and camp with our dogs, ( our kids). We have a hard time finding beaches that allow them to go to the beach with us as we can't leave them unattended at the RV. Thought I would share what I found out and maybe if anyone else has any added info it can be shared. St. Augustine, Jacksonville beaches, Flagler Beach in Fla but not on State park beaches allow dogs. Hunting beach SP in Murrels inlet, Huntington Island SP in Beaufort SC does too. The gulf coast in Fla. is not very dog friendly unless you go to Mexico Beach, Pt. St.Joe, Cape San Blas or Carrabelle Areas. We just love Destin but only resident dogs with a tag are allowed on beaches. Any other ideas would be appreciated. We are trying to plan our vacations this season.

There's a dog beach just South of Ft. Myers Beach. It's near Lover's Key and just over the Big Hickory Pass bridge, I believe. You have to watch the tides, though. Sometimes there's just a tiny strip of beach and you might have to wade to get to it.

In the Florida Keys, just past Islamorada at mm76 is Annie's Beach. You can walk out on the ocean side in the shallows and let your dogs go. The water is always warm because of the shallows and plenty of room for them to roam.

We're getting ready to go to the beach at Galveston, TX. with our 3 Shih-Tzu. There is a 1-mile section where they can run off leash, and there is an 8-mile section where they need to be on leash; free parking there, too.
(We'll be staying at the Comfort Inn & Suites while there.)

Naples Florida Dog Park
Rover Run Dog Park at Veterans

This is the place where people love to bring their dogs to bask in Southwest Florida's beautiful sunshine. This is currently the only dog park in Collier County and the only location where pets are allowed.

There is both a small dog area and a larger dog area. So if you have a smaller pet, not to worry, larger dogs are separated for your pet's safety.

Rover Run is open dawn to dusk.

If you have questions about this park, you may contact the Veterans Community Park's Administration, which runs this area of the park. Their phone number is 239-566-2367.
dogfriendly.com

has listings of dog friendly BEACHES, restaraunts, dog parks, lodging, camp grounds, RV parks etc. all over the U.S. and a few places in Canada that all take dogs. It acually has more information than this website, but they are both helpfull in thier own ways.

P.S. Stay away from any Holiday Inn's.
They put Rat Poison in their rooms, including the pet rooms, and DON'T tell anyone. See "rodent poison under the bed", where a reader almost lost her two Yorki's.

Stay away from Tybee Island, Georgia. Not dog friendly. I've heard they allow dogs on the back river beach, but get different answers depending on who you ask.

We live at the NJ shore, and love taking our basset hound to Island Beach State Park. There is an entrance fee and the dog beaches are unguarded, but it's a great, uncrowded place to spend a lovely summer day.

Dog Beach in San Diego is my favorite. Fort Lauderdale also allows dogs in certain areas on weekends!
