St. Augustine...Large Dog-friendly things to do?

Postby Wonders10 » Sat May 03, 2008 10:46 pm

Hi everyone,<br><br>I'm heading to St. Augustine with my mom for the very first time and bringing along my dog, a standard poodle.  I've read some of the things to do with your dog, but just looking for suggestions and what you all have done/would recommend.  We are staying at the St. Francis Inn.<br><br>Thanks!

Well, not being a native of Florida, but an RV visitor (including many a summer) I've been to most dog-friendly beaches and keep a running list in my head.<br><br>I haven't been to St. Augustine with the pups, but Jacksonville to the north has a lovely dog-friendly beach at Kathryn Hannah Abbey Park.<br><br>To the south of St. Augustine is Flagler Beach. There is a dog friendly beach on the south side of Flagler (immediately north, of the State Park).<br><br>Dog's are not allowed on the beach of the State Park.<br><br>Both areas (if I remember correctly) require leashes on the beach.

darfos...thanks for your reply.  I'm about to try and find your review on tripadvisor, but in the mean time, could you be more specific about what you considered "not dog friendly"?  To me, it seems many of the major attractions allow dogs somewhere on their property as well as restauraunts and beaches.  Especially for you, traveling with a smaller dog - it seems you can take them anywhere these days.  <br><br>Thanks for your input!

We did find St. Augustine pretty dog-friendly.<br>Florida Cracker will allow you dogs on the patio. We stayed at<br>The Inn at Camachee Harbour.<br>We loved it there.  Going back in November and very disappointed they are booked for the weekend we are going to be there. Can't imagine staying anywhere else.<br>St. Augustine vistors guide and phone book list several<br>dog parks. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Gave our 'two girls'<br>treats when we came in. Remembered there names.<br>Can't say enough good things about this truly Pet Friendly Place.<br>

St. Augustine is a very dog friendly city. If you visit www.dogfriendly.com it will tell you a lot of the places that you can take your dog. I am sorry for the person who didn't find it friendly because they just weren't properly informed and could have had a much better time. You can walk your dog along the pedestrian mall St. George St. and occasionally a store owner will take pity on you, especially in hot weather, and let you bring your dog inside. Restaurants that allow dogs on their porches include Scarlett O'Haras, Florida Cracker Cafe, and Harry's and there are more and more restaurants allowing dogs becaus the city is making it easier to get a permit. You can't take your dog into the Fort, but they are allowed on the grounds as long as they are on a a leash. The Victory III Scenic Cruise allows dogs, the horse drawn carriages allow dogs, and you can take your pet into the Fountain of Youth on a leash, you can even take them into the buildings such as the spring house where they can drink from the fountain of youth, the planetarium, and the discovery globe. There are also two great dog parks in St. Augustine, one is on Anastasia Island next to the Mosquito Control Center, I don't know the address, and the other one is Treaty Park on Wildwood Rd off of hwy 207. Hope this helps.
